Default Monk and?

ok so after listening to my college mates bang on about this game i decided to order it

im a online rpg veteran

never the less, ive looked through pages and pages of guildwars related stuff, as i like to research before whichever game arrives, so i can get straight into it

now all my college mates say they are always desperate for a monk, so this is the primary proffesion of choice, as i always liked the look of healing class's in SWG, AO etc but always thought they might be a bit boring

but now im going to give it a go

so i thought id jump straight on here and ask what the best profession is to compliment a monk, although i still want to be able to do some damage for when my buddies arent online :P

also any tips on where i should be spending skill points in the beginning and what skill lines to go for thanks

much appreciated

There you go, no offensive, but highly defensive and healing.

A Monk is definitely the best support class. As for a secondary, Necro have summons that will give your party more meat shields and wells that can increase your party's regeneration, Elementalists have wards to buff your party, and Necros, Elementalists, and Mesmers all have energy management skills that help you be a better Monk.

Good Monk Attributes:
1. Divine Favor
2. Healing Prayers or Protection Prayers
3. Healing Prayers, Protection Prayers, or a secondary attribute

As for good skills, here is a list of every single skill that can be obtained for free, from a quest, without spending skill points:
http://cleaned.beyondunreal.com/temp...wardQuests.htm

Spend your skill points on skills that you think will help your group.

You can't really screw up, since you can change basically everything about your character except your primary class, at will.

Worth pointing out that you won't get the elementalist's best energy management abilities unless you go el primary, glyphs aren't that great. Btw, el/monk is a GREAT primary healer if you use it right, and can be much more resilient. Added bonus of being able to respec at any time and actually have fun playing a non-healer (you can do this with monk primary, but you'll take alot of grief from players who expected you to heal).

I wouldn't reccomend going element primary if you want to be a primary healer. This build is good to primarily heal monks and keep them alive. You need the Divine Favor to be a good healer. If you skip on this you're casting more and more of the spells over and over. I can cast 1 good spell and with a high divine favor, your ele primary would have to cast the same spell at least twice to compare.

I know Ele's have the larger healing pool, but when it counts in PvP, it seems like some of your healing spells can't recharge fast enough.

For a good basic healing setup that uses minimal energy split your points between divine favor and healing prayers. Then once you get Divine Boon (yak's bend). Maintain that enchantment while using Orison of healing. Orison of Healing uses low energy, you get the healing effects of that, the the divine favor effects, then the effects of the divine boon on top of it, it's like 3 healing spells in 1. Just watch the energy recharge.

Use that setup for other members and use healing breeze on yourself and you should be a decent healing monk as long as you know how to work with your team. You'll figure out the really cool skills later.

Basic monk:
Mo/**
11/10/10 into divine/healing/prot
Use spells like heal other and healing touch from healing prayers to heal damage. Use prot spells that remove hexes and conditions, along with reversal of fortune. Probably want to use Peace and Harmony as your elite.

More complex monk:
Mo/N
11/10/10 into healing/divine/blood
Use the same healing spells but also bring a couple of anti-nuke healing spells (stuff that really shines when a person is singled out and nuked by the entire enemy team at once) ex. infuse health, healing seed. Bring Offering of Blood and any other necro skills youlike from the necro skill tree (I like wells and life siphon)

That depends on how exactly you want your monk to protect/heal/defend your guys as well as himself...

Mo/W - somewhat unusual. Almost always go tactics with this build. Defends well against rangers and other warriors but tactics doesn't give much protection vs. elemental strikes.

Mo/Me - my preference if I had one on my team. Divine/Healing/Inspiration. Steal enemy energy and use it to heal yourself/teammates

Mo/R - Goofy. Uses Divine/Healing/Wilderness Survival. Nice combo I read about, Melandru's Resilience after Draw Condtions

Mo/E - Earth Magic. Defend using Wards, very good.

Mo/N - Sometimes Blood magic, sometimes death. Heals using well of blood etc.

Also, with Armor of Earth, you're a better tank than most warriors (W/E defensive earth magic warrior being perhaps the sole exception).

At least until your enchantments are shattered/rended...

Well, you only need like 10k or so to get the best armor, but you don't get it until late in the game. (unless you have people run you..). Thes best is what you like: Do you like physical resistance? More energy? Personally I prefer to have judges chest, judges pants, and arms + legs are the tattoos. Just for a mix of energy and decent physical armor.

The best armor in the game is at Droknars forge, and each piece costs about 1.5k + materials. There are other armor vendors in the game at their respectible locations, but they have cooler looking armor that does the same thing as the 1.5k, but cost 15k (per piece) +materials, but looks better to some people. YOu can get armor at Marhans Grott (15k), The Granite Citadel(15k), or UW/FoW(15k). This is all 15k per piece, but commonly reffered to as _insert town name here_ 15k armor.

If you running PvP then switching the chest for the elemental set is a good option. But for pure PvE, Judge Chest/Legs is great with tattoos on feet and hands.

Just focus on getting farther in the game. You will understand what were talking about very soon.

Tattoos are usually (if not always) called the Ascetic's set. They give +energy bonuses. Wanderer's/Saintly gives +armor vs. elemental and Censor's/Judge's gives +armor vs. physical, but -energy. The best armor in the game can be found at Draknor's Forge, which you will get to eventually if you follow the story. There are other places where you can buy armor at 10x the cost of Draknor's armor, but the difference is entirely cosmetic.

Some advice that I've heard, that I feel is good, is Tattoos on the arms and feet, Wanderer's on the chest, and Censor's on the legs. The arms and feet only get hit 12.5% of the time each, so you can dedicate those spots to energy rather than damage reduction. The chest gets hit 37.5% of the time and certain Elemental damage spells hit the chest automatically, so it's good to have elemental resistance there. The legs get hit 25% of the time, so it's worthwhile to have physical resistance there.

I prefer Monk/Warrior and Monk/Elementalist for PvE. The pace of the game is slower, the really expensive burst heals aren't as important, and the extra defense you get out of those two combos have time to work.

In PvP, I almost always want Monk/Mesmer or Monk/Necromancer for energy management. You simply get taxed harder, and the defenses of the other classes don't always cover their costs in efficiency.

Peace,
-CxE

Default My preference...

Personally, I chose to go all tats for my PvE lvl 20 monk. My rationale? How often (in PvE anyways) are you gonna be on the frontlines if you're a healing monk? Hmm...do I want better phys or ele protection, or- since I'm a badass healer, how bout I go for tats for the energy bonus? If I get hit, sure I may take more damage- but wait - I'm a healer...well look at that,I ''healing touched'' myself and I'm all better, not to mention I have plenty of energy to heal up the people who actually ARE taking real damage. Just my take on it.

that is what i thought...uhm looking on the net you get

ascetic pants

or

ascetic leg design

does that mean one set is in "material" form, but with same stats, incase you dont want to walk around in a bit of cloth?

also, can these be dyed? same as normal armor?

cheers alot for your help
